Mathematics

As an academically selective high school, Gosford High has students whose natural mathematical ability ranges from standard to outstanding. This creates unusual complexity for our faculty; We need to provide our advanced students with the challenges they crave while still ensuring a high standard of teaching for all students. Our Mathematics program is tailored to meet the needs of all our students. Students with enthusiasm and advanced skills in mathematics are provided with opportunities to extend and develop their skills in ways that would not generally be available at other schools. They also benefit from studying in the company of other outstanding students. All students are encouraged to participate in externally run mathematics competitions.

Mathematics is a mandatory subject in years 7-10 and is a highly desirable option for years 11 and 12. Students with outstanding mathematical proficiency are able to study at an accelerated rate. This means they may be able to complete their HSC Mathematics exam in Year 11. Mathematics equips students with critical life skills well beyond the obvious benefits of numeracy. It provides a precise means of communication and is a powerful tool for solving problems both within and beyond Mathematics. Students learn to ask questions in reation to mathematical situations, to develop and use a range of strategies and to explore and solve problems. They learn both the practical  applications of Mathematics to real word situations as well as the challenge and satisfaction of academic achievement in this subject. With staff support, students are encouraged to achieve their full potential, to strive for continual improvement - effort earns success!

The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

By studying mathematics, students learn to work mathematically – developing fluency, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning and communication skills.

The syllabus consists of the following strands:

  • number and algebra
  • measurement and geometry
