Rules and policies

Rules and policies are in place to make sure your child remains safe and well at school.

Visit the NSW Department of Education’s policy library for all current operational policies.

Our school uses the department's School Community Charter to ensure all of our communication is collaborative and respectful.

Attendance and absences

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent.

Young people below the age of 17 who have completed Year 10 must be:

  • in school, or registered for home schooling

  • in approved education or training, such as a traineeship, apprenticeship or TAFE

  • in full-time paid employment (average 25 hours a week)

  • in a combination of work, education and/or training (average of 25 hours a week combined).

Students 17 years and over who are enrolled in school must attend school regularly to meet HSC course requirements.

As a parent or carer, you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day when they are of compulsory school age. You must explain all absences to the school within 7 days.

For more information about compulsory school attendance, visit:

Gosford High School Attendance Procedures

Attendance is recorded at the start of period one each day by classroom teachers for all students in years 7-10 and senior students in period zero and one.

Seniors whose timetable commences after period one need to swipe on at the attendance office on arrival.  Failure to do so will result in the student being marked absent.  It is each student's responsibility to use the swipe card correctly.

Late Arrival

If any student is late, he/she should report to the Attendance Office. In most cases, a note is requested.

Absences

If a student is absent from school an SMS is sent on the day of the absence. It is a requirement that a note/email explaining the absence is submitted within 7 days. Please clearly indicate the student's name, date of absence and reason for absence.

When a holiday or another type of leave is known in advance, the following are required :

  • Up to and including 5 days absence : a written confirmation, either hard copy or email, from a parent advising reason for leave and dates absent.
  • Greater than 5 days : An Application for extended leave form needs to be submitted

Passouts

Occasionally, it is necessary for a student to request a passout to leave school early.

Requests for passouts are to be in writing and require:

  • Student's name
  • Date
  • Departure time required
  • Reason for early leave request

Written notes are required to be signed by a parent/caregiver.

Emailed requests are to be sent from a parent/caregivers email address on file.

Passout letters are placed in the letterbox outside the Deputies Office by 9.10 am.

Passout slips are then available for collection at Recess  from the Attendance Office.

Passouts cannot be given so that students may attend part-time employment.
