French, German and Japanese are the languages offered for study by classes in all years at Gosford High School. While our staff each specialises in a particular language, all are qualified to teach a number of languages.
Students with significant prior knowledge of a language, or special language proficiency, can in some situations be offered the opportunity to accelerate their studies.
Language study begins in Stage 4. During Year 8, students study one language for the year. They are required to complete 100 hours' study of one language for the School Certificate.
Students can elect to continue their language studies in Years 9 and 10 and to progress to ‘Continuers' courses for Years 11 and 12.
Gosford High School also provides students with the opportunity to study languages at the ‘Beginner' level for Years 11 and 12.
It is possible for students who have good reasons, to study a language not offered by our Faculty through the Open High School. If their application is successful, they can study the language of their choice under the supervision of one of our staff.
Our textbooks and multimedia resources are up to date and reflect the current teaching and learning philosophy of second language acquisition.
The language classrooms are well equipped with facilities that are needed to teach and learn languages, including appropriate computer based resources.
