Technological and applied studies (TAS) is mandatory for all students in Year 7 and 8. Students can also select from a range of elective TAS subjects.
Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) Faculty
The Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) faculty is a dynamic and future-focused learning area that plays a vital role in preparing students for the demands of an evolving world. Our faculty is staffed by a team of committed and enthusiastic professionals with diverse expertise across Food Technology, Textiles, Computing Technologies, Engineering, and Design and Technology.
TAS is compulsory for all students in Years 7 and 8 through the Technology Mandatory syllabus. From Year 9 onwards, students can specialise in elective courses aligned to their interests and career aspirations, with opportunities to explore and develop high-level skills in both traditional and emerging technologies as well as Food Science and Agriculture.
Students participate in a balanced mix of theoretical study and practical, hands-on experiences, applying the design and production process to solve real-world problems. These learning experiences build critical and creative thinking, problem-solving ability, and technological literacy—essential attributes for success in future learning, employment, and life.
TAS courses not only develop students’ technical and design capabilities but also foster confidence, independence, and pride in their ability to bring ideas to life. Regardless of a student’s future pathway, the skills gained in TAS—creativity, collaboration, and practical problem-solving—are invaluable and transferable across all fields.

Special Activities in TAS
TAS to Tasmania
Every year, we take Year 10 students who are studying a TAS subject on an enriching excursion to Tasmania. This experience is designed to broaden students’ understanding of sustainability, innovation, and design in real-world contexts. The itinerary includes visits to Richmond and Ross bridge, working farms, artisan producers, museums and leading design and technology businesses, offering valuable insights into how TAS-related skills and knowledge are applied in industry.
This excursion not only enhances classroom learning but also fosters independence, collaboration, and a deeper appreciation for the impact of Food, Textiles, Engineering and Design in everyday life.
